SUMMARY
Many people today say that their childhood fear of God was not a reverent awe, it wasn’t something that elicited respect from them, rather it was something that was an absolute terror, and over and over I have people tell me all they heard was hellfire and brimstone.

I hear statements like these:
“God keeps a permanent record of my sins.”
“God is going to punish me for every single mistake that I make.”
“If things are going badly, then I must be being punished for some sin.”
“I can never be loving enough, I can never be pleasing enough to God.”
“If I did let myself feel good about something, then God would get me for being prideful.”

It’s easy to bear to only one side of the road regarding our view of God and to be certain of our view of God so much so that our view of God is little more than a boasting about my God being able to beat up your God. It’s also easy to project onto our view of God characteristics of authority figures in our past. Those authority figures in our past have shaped our view of God in the present, in fact, they’ve distorted our view of God in the present and so when we hear this phrase, the fear of God, we cower or we’re repulsed by that phrase. In this sermon, we want to face down this unhealthy fear of God. We want to examine just a bit of the biblical record, the biblical truth, about our view of God.

"May you love God so much that you’ll love nothing else too much
May you love God enough that you’ll fear nothing else at all."
